Common questions

The things people ask first

Cost, timescales, ownership and what happens once the site is live. If yours is not here, ask — it costs nothing and there is no obligation.

How much does a small business website cost?

A four-page brochure site starts at £350. Adding SEO, analytics and a couple more pages takes it to £650–£850. A web application with logins, a database and an admin view is £1,100–£1,500, and one that also takes Stripe payments and sends email is £2,000–£2,500. An online store with a catalogue and checkout is £3,200–£4,200. Every project is quoted individually at a fixed price agreed in writing before any work starts.

How long does it take to build a website?

A basic site is usually live in about two weeks. Six pages with SEO takes two to three weeks, a web application four to eight weeks depending on complexity, and an online store nine to twelve. The clock starts once your content is with me — the most common cause of delay is waiting on copy and images.

Do I own the website when it is finished?

Yes. Full ownership of the finished site, the code and the hosting access transfer to you on final payment. You are free to take the project to another developer at any point. Open-source frameworks used in the build stay under their own licences, as they do everywhere.

Can I edit the site myself afterwards?

Yes, if you want to. A blog or simple content management system can be added to any package for £200–£400, which lets you edit pages and publish posts without coming back to me. Without it, content changes are either billed as they arise or covered by the change allowance in a monthly care plan.

What happens after the site goes live?

Every package includes a support window — 7 days on Basic, up to 30 days on the larger builds — covering defects in the work delivered. After that you can take an optional monthly care plan from £15, covering hosting, backups, updates, security patches and an allowance of changes. There is no obligation to take one, and you can stop at any time with 30 days' notice.

Do I have to pay anything up front?

A 25% deposit books your slot in the schedule, with the balance invoiced on launch and payable within 14 days. The first conversation, the quote and the written scope all cost nothing, and there is no obligation to go ahead.

Do you work with businesses outside your area?

Yes. The work is done remotely and clients can be anywhere in the UK. Calls, a shared preview link as the build takes shape, and email cover everything a face-to-face meeting would.

Can you rebuild or move my existing website?

Yes. Migrating an existing site is £140–£350 on top of the package, depending on how much content moves across and how many URLs need redirecting so you keep the search rankings you already have.

Are the websites accessible?

They are built to WCAG accessibility guidelines as standard — proper heading structure, keyboard navigation, sufficient colour contrast and meaningful alternative text on images. Beyond being a legal consideration for many organisations, it is simply how a site should be built.

Will my site show up on Google?

The Basic + SEO package and above include on-page SEO, metadata, a sitemap, and Google Analytics and Search Console set up so you can see what is happening. What nobody can promise is a particular ranking or traffic level — search results are outside anybody's control, and anyone guaranteeing a position is guessing.

Who am I actually dealing with?

Sef Downes, a senior front-end developer with ten years' experience, most of it on products used by large global brands. You deal directly with the person doing the work — there is no account manager in between and no agency overheads on the price. I take on a small number of projects at a time, and reply within two working days.

Still got a question?

Ask it directly. A first chat is free, and if I am not the right fit for what you need I will say so.
